Teen Hockey Player Dies After Taking a Puck in the Throat
In the past couple years the hockey world has discussed some major safety issues in our game, such as all players wearing visors, no touch icing, specific improvements in the equipment to protective players better and now tougher punishments to decrease the amount of head shots.
But today on November 14th a story came out about a 16 year old teen male who died after getting hit with a puck in a throat after an attempted block shot in game, this boy’s name was Kyle Fundytus. This Edmonton player was playing a Midget Double-A game at Clareview Arena, Saturday Afternoon when this incident happened.
After the incident Kyle was immediately taken to Royal Alexandra Hospital, where surgery was to take place. But unfortunately Kyle died on Sunday. May you rest in peace.
But still, let us rejoice in what Kyle gave to the city of Edmonton. The South Side Athletic Club, where Kyle played, called him, “a model player and a dedicated teammate.”
On the club’s website the team said, “His passion and enthusiasm for the game and life exemplifies traits of not just a great hockey player, but also a great person. Kyle’s sudden passing has shocked family, friends, and the hockey community. Kyle will be deeply missed by all.”
Don Cherry will say something about Kyle Fundytus on the next Coaches Corner on Saturday. The one thing I like about Don Cherry is that he has the heart for this kind of stuff.
R.I.P Kyle Fundytus
