Jorge Posada will announce his retirement from the game of baseball within the next two weeks, according to Yankees beat writer Sweeny Murti of Sportsfan WFAN in New York. The news just broke about 25 minutes ago on Murti’s Twitter account.

Posada was looking to a sign a free agent contract with a different team as the Yankees, who Posada spent his entire career with, ruled out bringing back the long time catcher for one final season. The Marlins were rumored to be a team interested in signing Posada, but there has been no talk of that in recent weeks.

One of the “Original Three” Yankees along with Derek Jeter and Mariano Rivera, Posada was an important part of New York’s four World Series winning teams over his 17 seasons in the Big Apple. Over his career, Posada had a career average of .273 with 275 home runs and 1,065 RBI’s. He also won five silver slugging awards and was placed in the top six of the AL’s MVP voting on two separate occasions.

For Yankees fans, this is great news. Many didn’t want to see Posada wear a different uniform in more than likely his final season in the big leagues. Now, he can retire in pinstripes the way it should be.
