BREAKING: Keala King Dismissed from ASU Basketball Team
Keala King is no longer part of the Arizona State Basketball team, according to Doug Haller of the Arizona Republic. ASU head coach Herb Sendek revealed on Sunday that the starter and team’s leading scorer was dismissed from the team.
“We have decided Keala no longer will be on the team. We wish him nothing but the best in the future,” Sendek said.
King was one of three players along with Chris Colvin and Kyle Cain to be suspended for the two games against USC and UCLA this weekend in Los Angeles due to “unacceptable conduct.” With six scholarship players, Sendek’s squad knocked off the Trojans on Thursday night, but got blown out by the Bruins on Saturday.
For a team that currently has a 5-10 record and has troubles putting points on the scoreboard, this is a big loss for the Devils. The sophomore was tied with Trent Lockett as ASU’s leading scorer at 13.7 points per game. He also averaged 4.9 rebounds and 3.3 assist.
True freshman Jonathan Gilling has replaced King in the starting lineup and has played well. The forward had 12 points, four assists and two rebounds against the Trojans. He would follow that up with a 17-point effort last night against the Bruins.
In the coming days and weeks, we will find out what exactly King did to be kicked off the ASU squad. For Sendek and his Devils, they have a scholarship freed up that they can use in this coming class or for a future one. Looking at the current 2012 class, the Devils have three commits and don’t appear to have an offer out on any remaining prospects.
For King, he is now free to go to any school of his choice. Highly recruited coming out of Mater Dei High School in California, he will garner plenty of interest from schools across the country. Arizona, Cal, Kentucky, Oregon, Oregon State and Stanford all had offers out for King back in the recruiting process.
