The San Francisco 49ers’ secret to success is out; the red and gold were revived this year by not only new head coach Jim Harbaugh, but a recent YouTube video that is sweeping the nation. “Honey badger don’t care” is a comical phrase that has given the 49ers a new kind of confidence this season, leading to the team’s 13-3 record and No. 2 seed in the NFC playoffs.
Several 49ers quickly took to a film spliced by Harbaugh incorporating team highlights and the YouTube video about the honey badger and the epidemic evolved from there. The players seem to relate to the Guinness Book of World Records calling the honey badger the toughest member of the animal kingdom and the meaning of the YouTube video’s slogan is growing by the minute.
After the 49ers beat the Pittsburgh Steelers during a Monday night game in which the stadium lights went out before kickoff, Harbaugh yelled “Honey badger don’t care about no lights!” during a team huddle in the locker room.
The 49ers lead the NFL in forced turnovers, something some of the players credit directly to the honey badger slogan. San Francisco wasn’t the first to adopt the slogan; “honey badger” is a nickname that was first given to LSU defensive back Tyrann Mathieu for his fearless style of play. However, San Francisco still has a chance to win a championship, something LSU failed to accomplish in the BCS title game. Does honey badger care about that?
