Steven Tyler was brought in to sing the national anthem before the AFC Championship Game on Sunday.  Tyler didn’t exactly bring his A game to the performance.  In fact, I’m not sure if he brought his D game.

It was PAINFUL to listen to.  I’m pretty sure we can induct this into the awful anthem hall of fame along with Carl Lewis and Roseanne.  Tyler should probably hang up his microphone.

I really hope we don’t have to listen to that ever again.  Sounded like someone was strangling a cat.

  1. Kissane says:

No need to be hatin’ on our beloved rock ‘n roll icon. Shame on you for trying to compare his talent with that of Roseanne. Dang, dude, Steven Tyler was flawless! You’re just pissed cuz they didn’t put you on the A.I. judge’s panel. I’m gonna listen to it ten more times just cuz you hath not a clue. Its cool if you don’t prefer his “sound,” but do us all a solid and stick to what you know – which is definitely not musical talent.

    • Jerry Kosty says:

Well said Kissane. wonder why my post was not posted

      • Doris says:

Way to go!!! Steven Tyler is GREAT!!! Ditto on what you posted

      • pat says:

I think he did a great job you could understand the words and no mistakes like others had made, And after all he’s a ROCK STAR and that his style.
        JOB WELL DONE!!!!!!!!!!!1111

    • Steven Tyler says:

i enjoyed it , that is just ST’s normal singing.I didn’t think he chopped it up at all.

      • JC says:

Steven Tyler did an awesome job! That is a very difficult song to sing, but he hit all the notes, got the words RIGHT, and his PASSION was overwhelming! Way to go, ST!

    • Steve says:

That is just Steven Tyler and how he rolls. Well done !!

    • Dutchess says:

Right on Kissane !! Couldnt have said it better. He sang it Aerosmith style!

    • bobby says:

Yea fuck ‘em. I’m 52 and I grew up on Aerosmith along with the rest of the REAL rock and roll talent out there still touring…or not. That what Steve does my man….sing it like the maniac rocker he is. What? You think the people who booked him thought they getting Barry fucking Manilow? C’mon man! Now that chic doing the NFC game….yea great voice I guess…but I still wanted to shoot the TV…..

  2. Jerry Kosty says:

He sang that song correctly. with every word right. and in his style. I would like to hear you sing it at 63. and from what I heard and saw the crowd went Nuts. Shame on you you for your bad review. Not everyone is in your realm of perfection you little mini micro manager It’s people you that have brought this country down.

  3. Tommi says:

You must be a complete idiot to say such things about Steven Tyler! He sounded exactly like he has for 40 years! It is his ” style “! I guess you listen to Justin Beiber too much instead. Stick to writing your crumby articles and leave this ROCK GOD, alone!

  4. Wheel says:

It was solid, no missed words, done the way ST does it, maybe not as good as his ’04 World Series version but that was 1 of the best ever, very solid very Steven Tyler-ish. Oh yeah the Pats & Sox have won every major event in which ST has sang the NA.

  5. Tsyllrse says:

Sounds like Steven Tyler. He is not a great singer just had some great songs and awesome rock and roll music behind him.

  6. Bridget Bennington says:

Yep, that was Tyler. He sounds much better once they re-do his normal voice for recording (lol). This shows he’s not much of a normal singer!

  7. Barbara Gallagher says:

I don’t know what people are talking about. I think he did a great job. He did not mess up the words and he sings the way he sings. I also thought he was very respectful too. People are ridiculous.

  8. Linda Grzebielucha says:

…And you who are complaining should be casting your (rolling) stones becuase you’re so…what???????????? It was classic Steven Tyler. He can do no wrong when he sings.

  9. Jim Nick says:

I’m no Steven Tyler fan nor am I A rock music fan. I’d rather listen to a bunch of dogs barking. BUT the Singing that Steven Tyler did has got to be 1 of the BEST I’ve ever heard. Obviously he put his heart into singing OUR National Song and there can be NO comparison of the singing that Steven Tyler did to Roseann (burp) Barr. nor to somr of the other clowns that has butchered this Great Song.

  10. ckforst says:

From what I heard on TV this morning before I listened to the video, I thot ST left out a whole segment of the song…..then I watched the video. I have to agree with Kissanne and Wheel, it was done by Steven Tyler in perfect Steven Tyler form! I thot it was great!!!!!

  11. Ted Snapp says:

This was much better than his version at the Indy 500 about 6-8 years ago. That one was an absolute disgrace. It seemed as though he was actually trying to do his best this time. Screaming and posing is part of rock and roll, but not the National Anthem. Did the NFL not know how awful a pure singer he is? He needs to go back to the band.

  12. Mariann says:

He was on it baby! He is perfect. Steven Tyler is the man!

  13. Lynn Wollfe says:

Tyler’s rendition certainly wouldn’t be my favorite, but I liked the soul he seemed to pour into it (kind of like, but not quite like, Ray Charles singing “America”). That’s what really matters. How many people leave their hats or caps on, stand there without placing their hand over their heart, and don’t even know the words to our county’s National Anthem. I give Tyler credit for singing it with heart and on pitch. It’s a tough song to sing. Real men sing loud, not necessarily in tune! So sing it Steven, and sing it loud. If promoters want the National Anthem sung perfectly, they should get someone like Sandi Patti or Pavarotti (a little late for that, though) or maybe Lievens Castillo. Surely, they knew what they were going to get from a rock star.

  14. MSNelson says:

He was great! It’s Steven Tyler, for pity’s sake! What did you expect? He put his heart and soul into it. He was respectful of the anthem, the lyrics were correct. It is a difficult song to sing for the best vocalists with great range — a noble effort for a 60+ rocker! Makes me think that the media wants to create drama and scandal where there isn’t any. Imagine that! Kudos to you, Steven! You rocked it!

  15. Justin says:

Hmm… I’ve seen Aerosmith several times in concert, and that was some good old fashioned “demon of scream’n” vocals… He didn’t even go as crazy on the ‘land of the FREE’ bit as I’ve heard him do in the past. I serve our country (indirectly) every day and am damn proud to have someone like Tyler hailing from our ‘land of the Free’ and singing at our games!!!

  16. Shell says:

seriously….come on now….Tyler rocked, as usual…just a true artist! Nice to not only hear the anthem, but to beable to feel it-that’s what Tyler brings to the “stage!!”

  17. Lavender says:

Would anyone expect any less from Steven Tyler??? Please! He sang his heart out! May not have sounded like Barbara out there, but wasn’t that the point? When we sing along with Steve, we sing our hearts out babe! And by the way, were YOU standing at attention with your hand over you heart? You should have been! ;-)

  18. Bob Goodwin says:

Thie guy couldn’t make it as a contestane on AMerican Idol, he is America’s idiot .

He tries to sing on CBS and then he appears later in the day on FOX ? Someone screwed-up. He needs a hair cut and voice lessons. Maybe he would good at a WWE match , not in Prime time football. He was another embrasment to National Football League.

  19. Angela says:

How did he butcher it? He got the words right and did his Steven Tyler thing, what’s wrong with that? What about those that did it without reverence or messed up the words or were off key? Give the guy a break, everyone wants to hate. Can’t wait to hear the rants on Madonna at the Superbowl…everyone take a chill pill!

  20. Doris says:

Steven Tyler was awesome, He put the song in his Rockin Roll Way!! I suggest that you keep your opinions to yourself!!! to those who think it sucked….Go to you know where. He is in an awesome Class all to himself so don’t put him with Roseanne.

  21. JOHN DAUGHENBAUGH says:

YOU SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF THE FACT THAT YOU WERE TOO STUPID TO NOTICE EVERYONE CHEERING THE WHOLE WAY THRU INSTEAD OF JUST THE HIGH POINTS OF THE SONG,ONE THING FOR SURE, THERE IS NEVER A SHORTAGE OF PEOPLE IN THE USA, THAT DONT KNOW THIER ASS FROM A HOLE IN THE GROUND! JUST LOOK AT OUR GOVERNMENT! TO MR. TYLER, I SAY THANKYOU! JOB WELL DONE!

  22. RA SIMMONS says:

Look as a trained musician the National Anthem is a difficult “tune”. Great song but lack of words, a flat melody. It has been historically butchered by some of the best. Now Tyler, has nothing to prove to start with. He is who he is. They asked him to do it, and by my best guess knowing musicicans, he probably didnt stand in a mirror and rehearse, he more than likely went right out and winged it. Thats all you can really do with this song. The stadium is loud, its cold, echos , in a place like that is terrible. It plays with the ear. So most of you people that are quick to critic, are just short of a good brain. Tyler is a national treasure of the rock world, and a member of the rock and roll HALL of FAME. He will never be remembered for this performance so get over it. Buy one of the many albums, Like TOYS IN THE ATTIC, and give it a real good listen. Then get back with us GUMP!

  23. JJ says:

SO SAD!!Tyle needs to go back to judging AI and Not embarrass himslf like this. He is yesterdays News when it comes to screeching into a mic. His days are past. There are way to many folks that can actually sing that might of been asked instead of this sorry old guy.

  24. Nancee says:

Loved it, it’s Steven T……and he loves his team and country which
was shown in his ” style” which the writer has no idea of…

  25. Ron says:

That was absolutely atrocious and extremely painful. I could do better from my grave!!!!!!!

  26. george says:

It was awful. Like a lot of singers, he dragged out the song (not to mention screeched his way through it). Listen to a good military band play it in just about one minute. It’s a drinking tune. No need to drag it out like a dirge.

  27. sharon says:

The plane should of dropped a bomb on him !

  28. cyelrah1 says:

Riley Schmitt is probably a Beeber fan. Did you see his photo?

  29. Miki says:

It’s Steven Tyler…rock star always! I love him. Don’t compare his rendition to anyone who has, by someone’s opinion butchered the song – just no comparison. He was respectful, gave it his heart and soul and the crowd loved in throughout. Or didn’t you hear the crowd?
Stick to whatever it is you do – what is that again? And leave Steven and rock and roll alone.

  30. Elizabeth says:

I think Tyler was Tyler! I loved it…

  31. Joy Bowers says:

I’m old enough that I didn’t even know who Seven Tyler was when he showed up on American Idol – my son had to tell me, even then I’d never heard of him or his group. If he sounded like then when he was “popular” he surely went downhill since then. He was almost as bad as Rosanne except he didn’t say a bad work then spit. Sounded like he may have had a really bad sore throat for several years before trying our National Anthem -such a disgrace – why not get Anrea Bocelli, Celene Dion, etc. Hope they didn’t actually have to pay him to do this. I stopped watching American Idol when Elen Degeneres came on and he is probably worse than she was. So much from an old person.

  32. jag gaj says:

I don’t understand what people are talking about. He sounded just like himself. I guess all of these people hate Aerosmith, as well.

  33. rRufus Morgan Alexander says:

the wailing of cats in heat is less objectionable than steven tylers rendition of the star spangled banner. it was truly the low point of the nfl season. it’s a godd thing frances scott key is dead because that performance would have killed him.

    • believerof says:

um, frances scott key stole the anthem from a british drinking song. its hardly the patriotic pinnacle people seem to think..
      lemme guess, republican right?

  34. believerof says:

one things for sure, people sure are abject BABIES about their little patriotism. which is of course funny cause freedom is supposed to be the whole point…

only republikans can play the “i’m more patriot than you!” game properly though.. don’t mess with THEIR anthem..

aka, how in the HELL did you think steve tyler would sing it? dod you kick dogs for being dogs?
did you complain to the FREAKING talent buyer? or just sound like an ignorant redneck about it, like he showed up and just chose himself to do it?

    gawd people are DUMB.

  35. Ross Jelinek says:

When did we become a nation of people that only standby and criticise? Are we all such perfect vocalists and of such astute musical background that we no longer need to exercise our voices in song? Have we become spectators of song as well as spectators of football? Or, are we just too lazy to sing?
Instead of inviting some song stylist to perform for us, why not invite a celebrity to lead us all in song? Then each of us can do our own Roseann Barr impression or Steve Tyler rendition. The stadium could show the words to the song on the diplays where the downs and game time are shown so the lyrically lost among us can follow. We all know the tune, don’t we? I mean, if you spent the money to go to the game . . . then . . . participate!
Then, the blogs will be full of how much better the crowd at the AFC game sounded than the crowd at the NFC game or that “There’s one thing you can say about the fans at Candlestick, they sure know how to sing that song!”
Its our song, America. Sing it!

  36. Glen says:

I actually can’t hear what’s wrong with it. He doesn’t blast it like the girl singers which is refreshing

  37. gilgerard says:

Note to self: people care about the national anthem.
