Baltimore Ravens Hire Jim Caldwell as Quarterbacks Coach
Baltimore Ravens head coach John Harbaugh announced Monday the hiring of former Indianapolis Colts head coach Jim Caldwell as the new quarterbacks coach.
“Jim has a tremendous history coaching at the college and pro level, especially working with quarterbacks and providing help with offense,” Harbaugh said. “The timing is right to add a quarterbacks coach after Cam [Cameron] and Joe [Flacco] worked so closely and well together this year.”
Caldwell was the quarterbacks coach for the Colts from 2002-2008 before being named the head coach in 2009 after Tony Dungy retired. In three seasons he posted a 26-22 record after a very promising start. He had one of the best debut seasons in NFL history when he led the Colts to a 14-2 record and an appearance in Super Bowl XLIV.
After a neck injury that forced Peyton Manning to miss the entire 2011 season, the Colts stumbled out to a 0-13 start that eventually led to a 2-14 record. The fallout resulted in the firing of vice chairman Bill Polian and his son, general manager Chris Polian, with Caldwell soon after.
It is important to note that Caldwell was Manning’s QB coach for his three NFL MVP awards plus his Super Bowl victory. There is no doubt Manning is one of the most talented and hardworking quarterbacks in the history of the NFL but it would be a shame not to give Caldwell credit for some of the success.
I would not be surprised if we saw an improvement in Joe Flacco’s numbers next season. Let’s be honest, the Ravens are a good offense away from a Super Bowl win and Caldwell could be the person to make that happen.
