Rob Gronkowski has made a name for himself on and off of the gridiron over the past five months. “Gronk” has done it all: scored multiple touchdowns for the Patriots at tight end, frolicked with adult entertainers, and amused and angered folks by celebrating after the Patriots Super Bowl loss at a local New Orleans establishment.

Earlier this season, Gronkowski earned a $7,500 dollar fine from the NFL for a November 18th touchdown celebration which the league deemed excessive.

Enter the American Hockey League’s Worcester Sharks.

As a goodwill gesture, the Sharks agreed to pay Gronk’s $7,500 NFL fine if he would, in return, spike a ceremonial first puck prior to a game against the team’s biggest rival, the Providence Bruins.

Gronkowski accepted and will “spike” the ceremonial first puck prior to the drop of the Sharks/Bruins game in Worcested on Friday, February 24th.

Minor league hockey teams are never short on gimmicky promotion ideas. These ideas are the lifeblood of such teams who often struggle to make ends meet from month-to-month, much less turn a profit.

Fans who attend the February 18th game will received a 10X8 photo of Gronkowski, and a limited number of season ticket holders will have the chance to have the photo signed by the Patriots tight end. It’s a clever promotion by the Sharks’ front office who had their eyes open and brains charged as the Patriots took the field this season.

They saw a chance for a promotion and capitalized on it– that’s what being successful in minor league sports is all about.
