Tascosa HS Produces No-Hitter and Triple Play in Same Game
Amarillo, Texas high school, Tascosa, produced a statistical oddity on Thursday afternoon in a 10-0 win over Perryton High that is worth a mention.
Tascosa sophomore right-hander Tanner Cordova threw an abbreviated, five-inning no-hitter, blanking Perryton, an essential part of which was a triple-play from his defense.
According to the Amarillo Globe News and the Society for American Baseball Research, the combination of a no-hitter and a triple play in the same game is very rare.
In professional baseball, the last time the combination occurred was last summer, on June 19, 2011, when the Northwest Arkansas Naturals managed to do so in a Texas League game.
The inning-ending triple play in the fourth inning came with as a line-drive was hit to Tascosa first-baseman Tucker Davidson who caught it, stepped on first for the second out, and threw to second to double-off a runner who had led off second.
For fans who showed up to watch a few innings of baseball on a blustery West Texas fall afternoon it was a cool moment captured in time.
For Tascosa pitcher Tanner Cordova, it was the memory of a lifetime:
It’s something I try not to think about while I’m out there pitching because I want to let the defense make the play. I was just hitting my spots with a curve ball, and that’s going to give me a chance to win. It’s a great feeling, and it’s something I’m going to remember the rest of my high school career.
The fact this game was five, rather than the normal seven-innings, in no way dampers the pure randomness of a no-hitter and triple play occuring in the same game.
The odds of two of baseball’s rarest feats happening on the same day, in the same game, are off the charts.
Who would’ve thought it would happen in Amarillo, Texas?
It’s just further proof that you never know what’s coming next and where it will happen.
