Photo: St. Louis Cardinals Star Prospect “Minor League Guy On Third”
Major League Baseball spring training is a grind for all the players, team officials, coaches and everyone else involved in getting prepared for the regular season.
In the late innings of spring training games, guys shuffle in and out to get a few at-bats, throw a few pitches, or field a few balls in the infield or outfield. These “quick changes” often cause confusion among whomever is calling the games and for the television networks.
On such instance happened last evening for the St. Louis Cardinals broadcasting team, as a Cardinals player who had reached third base suddenly became named “Minor League Guy, On Third”.
This picture has been circulated around the Internet, even prompting Tim Burke of Deadspin to create a backstory for the nameless phenom which includes a childhood in Venezuela followed by indoctrination by the United States government to rat out other Venezuelan players whose goal was to bring down the country’s infrastructure.
Chuckle. Giggle.
The actual name of this minor league prospect has yet-to-be-determined.
Let’s hope that we never find out, for his sake.
Let’s also hope that whoever he is, he doesn’t have access to the Inter webs to see how virality can not always be a positive.
A tip to the St. Louis Cardinals broadcasting team– especially whoever does captioning– find yourself a team roster and become familiar with it.
This seems like a perfectly reasonable request to prevent future chyron failure like our subject “Minor League Guy On Third” was a part of yesterday afternoon.
