Recent Audiotape Should Cement New Orleans Saints Head Coach Sean Payton’s Year-Long Suspension
Crystal LoGiudice-US PRESSWIRE

Today, suspended New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton was to have his appeal of his year-long suspension heard by commissioner Roger Goodell and a recently released audiotape  of former Saints defensive coordinator, Gregg Williams who also has been suspended indefinitely by the NFL should cement the year-long suspension of Payton. The audiotape is from the day before the Saints took on the San Francisco 49ers in the playoffs.

On the tape Williams states “we’ve got to do everything in the world to make sure we kill Frank Gore’s head.”  Later on he also mentions “we need to decide on how many times we can beat Frank Gore’s head.”

There’s reference to Kyle Williams who was coming off of a concussion and he says “the little receiver, no.10, about his concussion, we need to put a F***** lick on him right now.”

Also, mentioned on the clip is that of Michael Crabtree and Williams makes this statement “we need to decide whether Crabtree wants to be a fake ass primadonna, or he wants to be a tough guy. We need to find it out. He becomes human when we f***** take out that outside ACL.

Other 49ers included were Alex SmithVernon Davis and Kendall Hunter and the clip on YouTube is a four minute clip of the 12 minute speech. With the full length audiotape found here.

According to the ESPN Article  the reasons for Payton’s suspension was understandable as Payton denied the bounty program existed, had assistants attempt to cover up the program, ignored the NFL’s instructions that bounties should not be paid and now with the audiotape that was just released it is the nail in the coffin for the year-long suspension to be upheld by Goodell.

This latest development with the audiotape shows that Payton may have been given a punishment that was not harsh enough and should have been an indefinite suspension. The punishment now is not harsh enough and the NFL definitely needs to make sure that bounty programs like this are eliminated and with stiff penalties to anyone involved especially the coaches and coordinators. It is one thing for a coach to engage their players and motivate them to play hard; it is an entirely different story when a coach has instructions for his players to target specific areas of the body in hopes of injuring specific players.

For Payton the bounty suspension couldn’t have come at a worst time with the NFL right now facing numerous lawsuits over concussions. With Payton being aware of the bounty program it only makes sense that a year-long suspension by Goodell was justified and there is no doubt that it will be upheld.
