Yoenis Cespedes Continues Impressive Run With The Oakland Athletics
Yoenis Cespedes has put his name into select company in Oakland Athletics franchise history with his outstanding start to the 2012 season. He has now hit three home runs in his first four games with the team and now joins a list that includes Jack Cust, Mark McGwire, Reggie Jackson and Jimmie Foxx. What is also impressive for Cespedes is that all four of his hits this season have gone for extra bases, all three home runs have been hit with at least one runner on base and that he has gone from batting seventh in the A’s lineup to hitting cleanup. The one concern for Cespedes at this point is the amount of strikeouts that he has had, seven. He has swung at a number of pitches in the dirt though once he gets more comfortable with Major League pitching he should begin to lay off those pitches.
Another reason why Cespedes should be able to keep up his impressive run is that Jemile Weeks has started the season out slowly along with Coco Crisp. Once those two start hitting, Cespedes now in the cleanup spot should get even more opportunities to drive in runs.
Defense has been the main struggle for Cespedes as he misplayed a line drive off the bat of Ichiro that went for a triple, he also has had an issue with making the exchange out of his glove to his throwing arm and on a single misplayed the ball on the ground. Of the three instances where Cespedes had misplayed the ball, the Seattle Mariners were only able to take advantage once and that was on the triple by Ichiro. The struggles defensively may have been a reason for the A’s to have Cespedes start the season in Sacramento, yet with the money invested in him that was not a likely scenario.
There’s no question that Cespedes will have his struggles defensively and offensively, yet he has the ability to make up for that with just one swing of his bat.
