Nike and Reebok Settle Tim Tebow Jersey Dispute
Shortly after Tim Tebow was traded to the New York Jets from the Denver Broncos last month, Reebok quickly came out with NYJ Tebow jerseys in order to squeeze out the last bit of profit they could before their NFL merchandising contract ran out. Well, Nike was not too happy about that (once they became the official NFL merchandise provider) and decided to sue the company saying that it infringed on its licensing rights.
Less than a month after the suit was filed, Reebok is throwing in the towel and ceasing any further effort to sell any more Tebow jerseys or t-shirts. Reebok also must eliminate any Tebow merchandise they currently have in any of their stores or chains.
It made sense that Reebok would try and sell as much Tebow merchandise as they could get away with seeing as Tebow had one of the top selling jerseys the past two seasons, not to mention that he was going to the biggest market in the U.S. Everyone is trying to get a piece of the former Broncos quarterback these days and Reebok was just trying to take advantage of their last few days as the NFL official provider.
A federal judge had said that Nike was likely to win the suit after taking over as the official NFL apparel provider at the beginning of April. Nike begins a five-year stint as the official apparel provider for the NFL and they have already made their impression on NFL merchandise.
Earlier this month Nike released their new jersey designs for the 2012 season at an extravagant launch party in NYC. While some teams didn’t change much of their design, other teams overhauled their whole look and bought into the Nike design.
I’m sure that Nike will reap the benefits that Tebow will provide as far as merchandise sales go and they may even want to use him in advertisements for other Nike merchandise now that they can. Tebow is a cash cow and Nike will try to squeeze all the money out of him while they can.
