Sorry Dwyane Wade–You’re Wrong About the Olympics
Jerry Lai-US PRESSWIRE

The best thing about the Olympic Games is the sense of pride it garners for one’s county and its athletes. The Games draw fellow countrymen together, cheering (for once) for a common team.

The Olympics are about pride in ones country and a pure love of ones sport. They’re about unity and patriotism.

Sadly for some, that doesn’t seem to be the case.

Earlier today, Rant Sports reported that Miami Heat star, Dwyane Wade, told ESPN that he thinks that NBA players should be paid to compete for their country in the Olympics. The primary reason he gives is that the athletes face a strenuous and demanding schedule, giving up their off-season to play for Team USA.

To me, this is precisely one of the biggest things wrong with America today—entitlement.

Kids across America dream of one day having the opportunity to grow up and represent their country in the Olympic Games. It’s an honor and a privilege to be one of the few selected to compete against the best athletes in the world for a chance to stand up on the podium while the Star Spangled Banner players as Americans watch from a world away.

Many give up their entire childhoods, training to get to a place they sadly may never be able to reach–their dreams melting away in disappointment.

I don’t think Wade understands this. I don’t think he understands the opportunity he’s been given. I don’t think he realizes how special it is to be chosen to compete for Team USA, or any country for that matter.

If pride, patriotism, and love for the game aren’t enough, then I suggest Wade sit this one out.
