World Series of Poker Will Have $1 Million Buy-In Tournament
Kyle Terada-US PRESSWIRE

Thanks to the United States’ ridiculous stance for online poker, the poker boom has come and gone. Considering there aren’t nearly as many online qualifier as there once was, the World Series of Poker is losing some of its luster. I always enjoyed watching when a professional is making a run in the Main Event. So much so that when the final table wasn’t live on ESPN, they had it on a pay-per-view, I remember staying up to 4AM watching Allen Cunningham. Why? I don’t know, but it was fun watching the professionals do what seperates them from the rest of us. And now with the recent news of a $1 Million dollar, 30-man tournament, all eyes could be on the World Series of Poker again.

The inaugural event will take place on July 1st in Las Vegas. The first place prize will surpass the previous record of $12 million that Jamie Gold won in 2006. Not only will the winner of the event win $12.3 million dollars, they will earn a specially designed platinum bracelet.

The 30-man field will be a mix of professionals like Johnny Chan, Daniel Negreanu, Erik Seidel, and wealthy businessmen like casino owner Phil Ruffin and Cirque de Soleil founder Guy Laliberte.

Although the prize pool will be large, the event is for a good cause. 11% of the proceeds will go to the charity One Drop, a charity that pushes for water in poor countries.

This is poker’s equivalent of an All-Star game. There is no doubt that the best of the best will be in this tournament. And with the egos of a lot of these guys, they will want to be the first champion of this tournament. Hopefully this becomes a yearly tradition, because poker could use a revival.

But if Negreanu and Phil Hellmuth are going heads-up for a $12.3 million first place prize, I’m tuning in.
