Bo Jackson Bikes Across Alabama to Aid in Tornado Relief
Last year, the nation watched in fear and empathy as tornadoes swept through the southern states, hitting Alabama particularly hard, destroying the homes of families, and taking the lives of hundreds of people.
Many samaritans stepped in to help and offer their assistance after the tragedy. Soon, former NFL and MLB star, Bo Jackson, will join in the effort as well.
Al.com and LosThatSportsBlog are reporting that soon Jackson will embark on a 300 mile trek across the State of Alabama to help raise money and awareness for the Governor’s Relief Fund, a fund established to provide money for those affected by the storms.
Jackson has special ties to the state, as he was born in the town of Auburn, where the Heisman Trophy winner also played college football for the Auburn Tigers.
Jackson, who is hoping to raise $1 million for the people of Alabama, told AL.com of his reasons behind the bike ride.
”This is something to recognize all of those great Alabamians that lost their lives in this tornado,” he said. “It doesn’t matter if they were Auburn fans, Alabama fans, Troy fans, UAB fans, (West Alabama) fans. When you have a significant loss of life in one day that we had in our state, that is enough to make you stand up and say ‘Hey, certain things aren’t important right now.’
“If I can do anything to shine the light on the importance of us treating each other with respect and showing that we are our brothers and sister’s keeper, if I can do that on a minute scale, I will feel I’ve done something worthwhile for my state and my fellow brothers and sisters.”
Fellow athletes Cam Newton, Scottie Pippen, and Lance Armstrong, among others, are helping him out along the way. The final stage of the ride is also open to the public for a $200 fee which will also be donated to the cause.
Jackson bikes will include the names of the 249 people killed in the storms. He will ride a different bike each day in their memory, and then auction them off.
So far, Jackson has raised $198,379.
Though I’ve always had a great deal of respect for Jackson, this makes me respect him even more.
Good for Bo.
