Roger Clemens may be out of the public eye, so he is doing what most washed athletes do to gain attention. The Rocket is making a comeback in independent baseball as a member of the Sugar Land Skeeters. Yes, that name is almost inane as this attempted return to pitching.
As far as I know, this can only end horribly. Remember when Roger Clemens was dominating the news cycle until everyone got sick of him? That led to a perjury trial where people kept getting kicked off the case because they were sleeping during the trial. Real captivating stuff there.
He is expected to start a game for the team on Saturday, which should make the fans show up by the dozens. I don’t blame the Skeeters for doing this. They will get a publicity boost and they should sell some extra tickets. People will turn out to watch a train wreck and that is what this pitching return has all over it.
Roger Clemens has the numbers to be a Hall of Famer but time will tell if the voters actually want him in the Hall. There are a lot of whispers about PEDs, although nothing was ever actually proven. Maybe if he dominates some independent ball, he can win over people and make the Hall. That is extremely unlikely but why else would the Rocket want to waste his time doing this?
This will certainly get him back into the news cycle but something tells me that the publicity will not last very long. Like Jose Canseco, he will eventually fade into the background until it is time to decide if he is a Hall of Famer. My gut says that he makes it but maybe the writers band together and keep him out. Either way, less Roger Clemens is good for all of us.
