Remember when Jon Lester was dominating on the mound and Jacoby Ellsbury was seen as the next MVP? Man, 2011 was so long ago. The Boston Red Sox have placed BOTH men on waivers and it remains to be seen if the team will actually move the two young guys.
Before we discuss what the Red Sox would be getting in a move, it would be smart to say a trade is probably not going to happen. Almost every player gets put on waivers. They get claimed and the original team pulls them back. It is the same song and dance year after year.
If I were to pick one of the two to actually get moved, it would be Ellsbury. I just do not think the Red Sox are going to pay him the money that he is going to deserve. It would be smart to move him, but his value is low due to injuries. His 2011 season may have also been a fluke, but I doubt it. Then again, you don’t know because the guy has barely on the field this year.
Contenders would be falling over themselves to get these guys. You can stick Lester in your rotation and he would instantly be a top two guy. There are teams that need that extra arm to push them ahead, but would the Sox actually do a move? Probably not. If they did trade one of these cats, it would be during the winter meetings.
The Sox may have had a bad year on the field but at least they have had plenty of story lines off of it to keep us all interested in them. Takes talent to keep people interested in a horribly underperforming team. Well, at least I think it does.
We’ll see how these MLB Trade Rumors pan out.
