This is why we love college football. Each and every year you have schools trolling the big programs looking to spoil their seasons, and it appears The University of Louisiana-Monroe has doomed the Arkansas Razorbacks into the depths after defeating them 34-31 in overtime. The Warhawks, which is probably the coolest mascot name I’ve ever heard, no doubt benefited from the Razorbacks losing star quarterback Tyler Wilson in the second quarter.
Wilson was unable to play the entire second half, which saw the Razorbacks squander a 28-7 lead they held in the third quarter. UL-Monroe kept chipping away at the lead, but scored on a miraculous 4th and 10 play with 47 seconds left in the game to force overtime.
After holding Arkansas to a field goal, quarterback Kolton Browning took it 16 yards for the game-winning score on yet another 4th down play. Browning threw an incredible 68 passes, completing 42 of them for 412 yards and four total touchdowns. This begs the question, what happened to Arkansas’ defense? Wilson doesn’t play both ways.
Arkansas gave up 557 yards to a school with 8,000 students, and erased any hope of a BCS berth in the process.
This is an embarrassing loss for John L. Smith, who signed a one-year contract this April to be the Razorbacks’ head coach. Losing to UL-Monroe is not exactly the way to make a good first impression, nor help forget the debacle that Bobby Petrino caused when he forced Arkansas to let him go amidst an ugly affair.
