The Harlem Shake is single-handedly the most viral thing to happen in 2013. There are hundreds of different kinds of Harlem Shake videos that are just as entertaining as the next. Even athletes got involved with their teammates. One of the best is by far the Miami Heat’s Harlem Shake video, which was a response to the one the Minnesota Timberwolves did.
The Boston Red Sox made a magical run through the playoffs to clinch the World Series title in 2013. One of the biggest moments was when David Ortiz hit a grand slam to tie Game 2 of the ALCS. The reason it went viral was because of Red Sox bullpen police officer Steve Horgan, who threw his arms in the air in jubilation as Torii Hunter flew over the right-field wall. Horgan became the talk of the town as well as a figure the fans rallied around as the Red Sox made their push.
Members of the Heat have been involved in a photobomb war for quite some time. It all started with Chris Bosh, which then led to LeBron James and then Dwyane Wade got involved. All of the photobombs the players do to each other are funny. However, Wade’s cartwheel while James was in the middle of a postgame interview on Nov. 25 takes the cake. The reaction of James and the interviewer is priceless. The two can barely hold it together while they discussed if Wade actually did two cartwheels before their very eyes.
Ohio State has one of the more talented marching bands you will ever see. They actually had a few videos go viral in 2013, with their Michael Jackson Tribute being one of the best. They even included Jackson’s famous moonwalk.
Former South Korean national gymnast Shin Soo-ji tossed one of the most incredible ceremonial first pitches ever to be recorded on camera prior to a game in Seoul. With her left leg planted on the ground, she completely flipped her body over and then tossed the pitch to home plate. The crowd and commentators went crazy, while she went on to global fame.
The Ohio State marching band was at it again when they performed their tribute to Hollywood not long after the Michael Jackson tribute. The students learned the drill and the music in little over a week. The show includes Superman, Harry Potter and Jurassic Park.
There is no specific video of military members surprising family members at sporting events as hundreds went viral in 2013. However, I thought it would be a shame not to include them in some way because of the impact they have on the Internet. Below are two of my favorite viral videos that have military dads surprising their family in two different ways.
\In one of the more emotional viral videos of the year, the Nebraska Cornhuskers football team helped seven-year-old cancer patient Jack Hoffman score a touchdown during the team’s spring game. If that wasn’t enough, the players raised Jack up on their shoulders and carried him off the field.
My favorite sports viral video of the year is that of James and Heat fan Michael Drysch. After Drysch hit a half-court hook shot that won him $75,000, he tossed his arms in the air in celebration. What happened after is what every sports fan dreams of. James, acting just like a fan watching a game-winner, hugs Drysch and tackles him to the ground. Drysch’s face is priceless when he embraces James, as I’m sure the moment itself is better than the money.
Don’t act surprised, you knew “THE NFL: A Bad Lip Reading” was going to be the top spot on the countdown. The most viral sports video of 2013 currently has more than 45 million views on the BadLipReading official YouTube account. Even non-NFL fans were sharing it on Facebook at an alarming rate as if it was the funniest video they have ever seen.
The video was so popular that it gave McDonald’s the idea to try the same thing in a commercial with Joe Flacco and Colin Kaepernick during the Super Bowl. The only funny part of the commercial was how incredibly bad it was.
