To the surprise of no one, golfer Rory McIlroy was voted the PGA Tour Player of the Year for 2014. The decision was made easy after McIlroy had arguably his best season as a professional.
McIlroy, who won the PGA Tour Player of the Year two years ago, is well on his way to being considered one of the greatest golfers of all time. Obviously, he has a long ways to go to be mentioned in the same breath as some of the greats. That is even with the numerous people who have found the need to compare him to Tiger Woods throughout this past year. However, his domination on Tour in 2014 proves he has everything it will take to be the very best.
The 25-year-old won two of the four major tournaments, including The Open Championship and the PGA Championship. Along with that, he won the World Golf Championships-Bridgestone Invitational and the BMW PGA Championship. Even more intriguing, he made the cut in all 17 events he entered, and he finished in the top 10 an astonishing 12 times in those events. He also never finished worse than 25th in any of the tournaments.
The statistic that many fans enjoy looking it is the earnings. McIlroy made $8.28 million in tournament earnings alone this past season, which was good enough for him to be recognized as the PGA Tour money winner. He also was awarded the Vardon Trophy for leading the PGA Tour in scoring average, a recognition handed down by PGA of America. The PGA Tour’s version of the award is the Byron Nelson Award, which he was also given.
McIlroy has appeared as the knight in shining armor for the PGA Tour after there was a dip in interest after Woods’ private life became public knowledge. He injected the golf world with an energy that filled the sport with excitement. Not to mention, the back-and-forth between Rickie Fowler and McIlroy should provide plenty of quality competition for years to come.
