They wowed us on the field, on the court and in the highest level of their sport, but even the great ones fall. Here are 10 athletes who passed away in 2014.

Alvin Dark was a professional shortstop playing in the MLB from 1946-60. He then went on to become a manager. Dark died at the age of 92 from Alzheimer’s disease on Nov. 13 2014.

Jean Beliveau, a member of the Hockey Hall of Fame, played parts of 20 seasons in the NHL. He won two Hart Memorial Trophies, as well as an Art Ross Memorial Trophy. He currently has the most Stanley Cup victories of any person to date, with 10 as a player and seven as an executive. At the age of 83, he passed away in Montreal.

Rob Bironas was a placekicker in the NFL for the Tennessee Titans from 2005-13. At age 36, Bironas was killed in a car accident after he lost control of the SUV he was driving.

Bob Suter is an ice hockey defenseman, most notably known as a member of the Miracle on Ice 1980 U.S. Olympic hockey team who won the gold medal. He died of a heart attack on Sept. 9 2014.

Brad Halsey was an MLB pitcher who pitched with the New York Yankees, Arizona Diamondbacks and Oakland Athletes. He died in Texas from either a fall off a 100-foot cliff on Oct. 31 2014.

Ross Lonsberry was a professional ice hockey player who played 15 seasons in the NHL, including as a member of Philadelphia’s back-to-back Stanley Cup championship teams. He also played for the Boston Bruins, Los Angeles Kings and the Pittsburgh Penguins. Lonsberry died of cancer May 4 2014.

Anthony “Tony” Gwynn, Mr. Padre, played 20 seasons for the San Diego Padres and had his jersey retired with them in 2004. He died of salivary gland cancer on June 16 2014.

Orlando Thomas was a defensive back who played from 1995-2001 for the Minnesota Vikings. After seven years of dealing with Amyotropic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), Thomas died from related complications on Nov. 9 2014.

St. Louis Cardinals’ top prospect, Oscar Taveras, had only just begun what many believed would be a promising MLB career. Unfortunately, he died in a car accident with his girlfriend in the Dominican Republic in Oct. 26 2014.

Pat Quinn was both a player and coach in the NHL, as well as coaching Team Canada to a Gold Medal in the 2002 Winter Olympics. On November 23, 2014, Quinn died in Vancouver after a long time battle with an illness.
