Some say it is too late for two of the greatest fighters in boxing history to throw down in the ring and gives us the fight we all deserve. Then again, it is better late than never.
Last month, Manny Pacquiao challenged Floyd Mayweather Jr. to sit down to negotiate a time and place for the fight of the century to occur.
“I do have one specific goal and that is to give the boxing fans the fight they have always asked for,” Pacquiao said, according to ESPN. “I want that fight [with Mayweather] too.
“I believe good-faith negotiations could produce that fight. But it is impossible to negotiate when you are the only one sitting at the table. Two fighters who want to fight each other have never been kept from fighting each other.”
If Pacquiao was making excuses because he knew Mayweather would not take the time to actually set up a fight, he better rethink his strategy. Just a couple of days after boxing promoter Bob Arum also called out Mayweather for avoiding possible negotiations, Mayweather responded in his own flashy fashion.
“Absolutely. I would love to fight Manny Pacquiao. We’re trying to make the fight happen,” Mayweather said Friday, according to CBS Sports.
“We want the fight. We’re ready,” he continued. “Let’s make it happen, May 2.”
May 2 is an incredibly interesting date to set. Usually, Mayweather chooses to have his fights on May 1. The meaning behind it is “May” is in his name and 1st signifies that he is No. 1 in the world. So, why would he possibly choose May 2? That is a question only Mayweather can answer. Nonetheless, it is quite intriguing to read into it as Mayweather internally believes he will not defeat Pacquiao in the ring.
With both parties claiming they are willing to sit down and seriously negotiate a date, it is inevitable the boxing match will occur. Even if it would have been much better if the fight took place years ago when Pacquiao and Mayweather were younger, it is still a match every true boxing fan would thoroughly enjoy witnessing.
At this point, it is back on Pacquiao to respond to Mayweather about what is sure to be one of the greatest fights in recent memory.
