There will be hundreds, if not thousands of farewells written to Stuart Scott over the coming days, but I had to pen one myself, if only to honor a true innovator. He was an ESPN SportsCenter anchor for many years who lost his battle with cancer on Sunday morning at the tender age of 49, and this was sad if not unexpected. If you missed his stunning speech at last summer’s ESPYs, prepare yourself to be moved.

It it tough to realize that Scott will no longer grace our television screens, and as fans, we can only send positive thoughts to his friends and family at this time. His swagger on the air was unparalleled, and phrases like “Booyah!” and “Cooler than the other side of the pillow” introduced a new kind of vernacular to the American public that should change sports media for decades in the future.

He will be missed. His fight against cancer was one that he ultimately lost, but it was the way he lived and loved during that battle which ultimately defined his legacy.

This loss strikes deeply, but the example of an amazing person like this should help us all to live without fear, because you never know how many moments are left. So it is with great bittersweetness that I bid farewell to Scott, but his impact will be felt for all time to come.
