To the shock of no one in the boxing world, the May 2 fight scheduled between legends Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao is expected to break numerous pay-per-view and attendance records. Plus, it just might be the most expensive fight to witness in person in boxing history.
Tickets have not gone on sale and no one has a clue how much they are going to cost. Considering the MGM Grand Garden Arena is looking to earn at least $40 million from ticket sales, which is double the $20 million record set by the same arena during the Mayweather-Canelo Alvarez fight in 2013, the ticket prices are expected to be as expensive as $5,000 and no cheaper than $1,000.
Even if the average fan is able to afford such a hefty price, the reality is there will not be a public sale. And, if there is, it will not be for more than 1,000 tickets. Essentially, the only way to get a ticket means knowing someone important. In fact, it has been suggested that a non-celebrity or person unknown to the boxing world will need a $250,000 minimum credit line with MGM Grand to get on the list to purchase a ticket. Also, the MGM Grand wants to be ensured the person with a $250,000 credit line spends every single dollar in the casino the night of the fight.
Therefore, the only realistic option is to watch the match at home on pay-per-view, which is what many of us are planning to do. Of course, paying the typical $60 to $75 fee to order a fight will not apply here. To watch it in high definition, which is the only way to go, it is expected to cost approximately $100 to order through either HBO or Showtime pay-per-view.
As if these facts about the Mayweather-Pacquiao showdown are not ridiculous enough, the fight itself is estimated to make more than $400 million, with Mayweather and Pacquiao taking a 60-40 split.
What has the potential to be the greatest boxing match ever witnessed will also be the most expensive, and that really should not be a surprise to anyone.
