As most Canadians (and many of their cold-weather brethren) know, there’s few better ways to pass the icy winter than with a good game of shinny. All around the Great White North, there exist neighborhood and backyard rinks, where Canucks of all ages share their near-irrational love of hockey. But what happens when you happen to live in the middle of the fourth-largest city in North America, where space is a scarce commodity?
Well, you build a rink where you can — say, on top of a 32-story building among the hustle and bustle of the city’s downtown financial district.
That’s just what Molson Canadian has done with Sky Rink, an audacious piece of Canadiana constructed in the heart of Toronto, Ontario. As part of its effort to literally elevate hockey to new heights through the #AnythingForHockey social media campaign, Molson is giving hockey fans in the 6 a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience Canada’s pastime in a setting unlike any other.
Of course, building a sheet of ice that’s half the size of an NHL regulation rink didn’t come without its challenges. From the project’s conception to its January 2016 completion, Sky Rink engineers had to take into account everything from wind factors, fine-tuning the weight of the ice, and not to mention drainage and maintenance concerns.
Oh, and there was also the matter of just how they were going to get this thing up 32 stories.
In the end, Molson got a little help from a neighboring building under construction, borrowing a crane to do most of the heavy lifting. It was by no means a simple project, though considering Molson is the same hockey-obsessed brand that managed to build a rink in the Rocky Mountains just last winter, it’s really no surprise that the Sky Rink got built in just a few months.
While originally designed for winners of the #AnythingForHockey contest, the Sky Rink has garnered enough local buzz that Molson has decided to keep it open past its original closure date of January 29, giving fans an extended window to experience the Toronto Maple Leafs-approved rink all the way through February 7.

The response has been expectedly feverous so far, with all 15 initial hour-long sessions (good for groups of 20) being sold out shortly after they were made available on www.rooftoprink.ca on January 18. To meet the additional demand, Molson Canadian will also be launching a second #AnythingForHockey contest through their Facebook, Twitter and Instagram accounts on January 20.
But what if you’re not in Toronto, not contest-inclined, or just a tad weary of heights? Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered here at Rant with a brief (and a little shaky) glimpse of what it’s like to skate under the lights:
Having now conquered the Rockies and the metropolis that is Toronto, one can only imagine where Molson will take its love of hockey next. Based on the track record, though, “somewhere unforgettable” is probably a good place to start guessing.
