Colorado Avalanche Getting No Respect in Playoff Race
The Avalanche are not being respected in the league. With the game tied at one and just under four minutes to go in the Colorado Avalanche’s game against the Calgary Flames, Ryan O’Reilly got high-sticked in the face, while going for a puck in the crease.
The referees were distracted by the “Landeskog Prom?” sign at the other end of the ice and missed the call even as O’Reilly’s broken noise gushed blood. If that call was made, the Avalanche would have been on the power play with a double minor for a four minute man advantage.
The Colorado Avalanche won the game, two to one, in overtime. David Jones converted the goal, and the Avs walked away from the Flames with three points in the standings, but the feeling that they should have put a four point buffer between them and their Northwest Division rivals. The Avalanche did not receive a power play the entire game; it was their sixth game without at least one man advantage.
The next closest team has only gone three games without receiving a penalty. The Avalanche by far have had more penalties called against them than for them, and rank near the bottom of the league, despite being in the middle of the pack when it comes to penalties. They have been called for 832 penalty minutes, but the other teams have been called for only 708 minutes.
Why are the Avalanche not getting the respect they deserve? Joe Sacco was livid after the game the other night. The Denver Post’s Adrian Dater quoted him as saying the following:
“I hate to sound like I’m complaining, because that’s not what we’re about, but at the end of the day, enough is enough,” Sacco said. “It’s baffling to me right now.”
The Avalanche head into tonight’s critical game sitting in seventh place with 85 points. They have played 75 games, with the Kings and Coyotes only one point back with fewer games played. The Avalanche must beat Phoenix tonight to continue their playoff push.
