After months and months of construction the University of Colorado officially opened their new basketball and volleyball practice facility.
A ceremony was held earlier today to unveil the new building to the public as current players and coaches were stationed around the facility to answer any questions or to sign autographs.
The opening of the new facility is a big step forward for all programs involved. For years CU’s facilities were far behind other schools in the Big 12 and it hurt them recruiting wise. Why would a recruit want to go to a school where practice was held on the same floor they played their games on? After coming from schools such as Kansas and Texas, whose facilities were top notch, Colorado’s probably seemed like a junior college.
But not any more.
The facility is a shiny new recruiting tool that comes at a great time for the athletic program as it makes the transition to the Pac-12. A new conference plus a new facility adds up to a more attractive recruiting presence.
The new building boasts 11,000 square feet of practice courts (or two gyms) that have the same dimensions as the Coors Events Center floor including the exact same paint job and logo placement. Each court has eight baskets which can be used as part of full-court, half-court or partial court drills. The volleyball configuration can be made into a full length court or two crosswise courts in both gyms.
It’s good to see that the program is progressing and realizing that in order to bring in top-notch recruits you have to have top-notch facilities. The program took a giant step forward with this new facility and look for it to pay off in the years to come.
