Although the college basketball season is a few months away, CU’s basketball program has already suffered a loss.
As first reported by buffzone, Freshman recruit Damiene Cain has announced that he will not play collegiate basketball for the Buffs because he wants to focus solely on his academics.
Cain said this in an official release statement: ”After careful consideration, I have decided not to play basketball on the collegiate level. On a personal note, I feel it’s best for me to pursue a college degree without the restrictions and demands that come with being a student-athlete. I wish to thank all the people at University of Colorado and my family for their support in this decision.”
Cain was an important part of the 2011 recruiting class for Tad Boyle, standing at 6-7 he was supposed to help the Buffs shore up their post defense and help their rebounding woes. But as Cain said in his statement, the demands of playing D-I athletics are too much for some to balance with their school work. You can’t fault the kid for wanting to focus on his academics it’s just a shame that he won’t be able to help the Buffs next season.
Along with incoming recruits, guards Askia Booker and Spencer Dinwiddie, Boyle was able to put together a solid class. Now without Cain in the mix, the returning big men for Colorado will have more pressure to perform well. The Buffs are getting back 7-foot 250 pound center Shane-Harris Tunks from a torn ACL a year ago. They also are returning starter Austin Dufalt and Andre Roberson. Tunks will be looked at to be the enforcer inside on defense due to his stature.
Cain will still be enrolled in classes at CU this semester where he is an open-option major.
CU opens their season November 11th against Fort Lewis.
