Mitch Kupchak Leaving The Los Angeles Lakers?
Before the Lakers acquired Pau Gasol in a trade, that will go down in history as one of the best ever for the Lakers, and immediately afterShaq was traded to the Miami Heat fans of the Lakers were calling for Kuochak’sjob. Nobody in L.A was happy with what Kupchak was doing, putting a horrible product on the floor and one that had no chance of achieving what every Laker fan wants every year, an NBA championship. But all the talk from fans was just that, talk, and Lakers owner Jerry Buss never even thought of letting Kupchak which angered fans even more.
Then the Lakers acquired Pau Gasol, added a few more pieces to their puzzle and two NBA championships later Kupchak, according to fans, is the greatest general manager ever. Well now fans have reverted to their old form as they are unhappy with the job Kupchak is doing and want to see a change, well they may get their wish. According to famed, and usually accurate, basketball writer RolandLazenby there has been talk that Kupchak will be leaving the Lakers. Lazenby added, “I want to stress that what I hear is only talkaboutKupchak. But in the past you’d never even hear such talk.”
Lazenby brings up a good point in the second sentence of his statement. Although fans may have wanted Kupchak gone, within theLakers organization nobody has ever wanted him gone (except for maybe Kobe once). Jerry Buss has never wanted to fire Kupchak andKupchak himself has never had the desire to leave or pursue a job elsewhere. Why would Kupchak think about leaving now you ask? Well although Lazenby doesn’tknow why, he does have an opinion on the matter, “I have no knowledge whatsoever as to whyKupchak would leave. But the losses alone begin to mount up, with people he’s worked with for years.”
If you are a Laker fan, and have been critical of Kupchak this season, or ever, then this is music to your ears. But for those people who know Kupchak, or just know a lot about basketball in general, then you would know that Kupchak is one of the best GM’s in basketball.Lazenby on Kupchak, “Much maligned in the past, Kupchak is a great, great GM+a great stabilizing force in crazyland.” I also agree withLazenby, I would hate to see Kupchak go.
Even though I have been critical of Kupchak in the past it was simply out of anger and frustration but when it really comes down to it the Lakers aren’t going to get anyone better than Kupchak. Many fans forget that Kupchak pulled off a deal for Chris Paul this past off-season, until it was vetoed by NBA commissioner David Stern, and with the cap room it created could have put themselves into a position to also trade for Dwight Howard if they wished to do so.
Is it Kupchak’s fault that David Stern does not want the Lakers to get better, and that every other NBA owner (especially Dan Gilbert who couldn’t put together an NBA title contender if he tried, e.g he had LeBron James and couldn’t win anything) hates the Lakersbecause they’ve been so successful? Of course it isn’t. Kupchak has made a few bad decisions as GM (the Lamar Odom trade comes to mind) but he can’t do much with the roster he has.
The Lakers are way over the cap, Jim Buss (Jerry Buss’ son) will not allow Kupchak to trade Bynum, and the Lakers really have nothing other than Bynum to trade. And for every fan out there hoping to get Dwight Howard you are wishing for the wrong player. What theLakers really need to win a title is a point guard, Laker fans should really be calling for a Deron Williams trade. Williams will push theLakers over the hump and lead them once again to an NBA championship. Kupchak knows this is what the Lakers need and there is a real good possibility that he will get it done, but it can only happen if he stays as GM.
