New Jersey Nets selling tickets for $.01
With the combination of a shortened season, a struggling economy, and a team largely lacking in star power, the New Jersey Nets are struggling to get butts in seats.
Typically, as far as good sports business practice goes, you want to be very careful as a franchise not to de-value your ticket stock, unless things are just so desperate that you feel like you have no other option. Apparently, the Nets front office– and presumably Russian billionaire owner Mikhail Prokhorov– are just that desperate.
In a bizarre effort to increase the Nets’ fifth-from-worst attendance, the team has started to sell some seats in the Prudential Center for as little as $.01.
Yes, you read that correctly, one red cent.
If this isn’t desperation, what is? If the Nets are telling me that they believe their product is only worth one cent of my hard-earned money, then I should, in turn, be really concerned not only about the present state of their team, but also it’s future, especially given the pending move to Brooklyn in 2013.
If you’re in Jersey, take advantage of the Nets’ silliness and go see yourself and NBA game for that penny that’s stuck in your couch cushions.
