First Ever NBA Tuesday Mailbag; Where Will Dwight Howard Land?
Today marks the start of the first ever NBA Tuesday mailbag. Every Tuesday for the foreseeable future I will be putting up a post answering two questions about the NBA that were submitted to me by readers. So without further ado here we go. If you would like a question answered you can tweet me @NBAINSIDERINFO, or just comment on this post and I will get to it next Tuesday.
Our first ever question comes from Matt in Oklahoma. Q: Do you think Dwight Howard is going to get traded by the trade deadline and if so to which team?
A: With Howard coming out recently and criticizing his teammates for a lack of effort it seems that the Magic locker room is a ticking time bomb and the only way to stop it is by trading Howard. Now Magic general manager Otis Smith did say that he doesn’t plan on making any major moves to alter the Magic’s roster in the near future. After the Magic lost to the Philadelphia 76ers on Monday night, making that four straight losses for the Magic, Smith said this, ”If a string of losses causes you to change your plans, then I’m in the wrong job. ”I think you look at your team as a whole and understand that we have to fight through whatever we have to fight through and you continue to evaluate everything top to bottom. That’s what you do. When it’s time to make a change, you make a change.”
Smith sounds like a guy who is naïve enough to believe that Howard is going to stay after this season, which he isn’t going to do. If Smith lets Howard walk after this season, and gets nothing for him, then there could be a change coming at GM for the Magic as that would be very detrimental to the Magic franchise.
With all of that being said I am still hearing that Howard’s wish list is as follows, New Jersey Nets, Dallas Mavericks, and Los Angeles Lakers, in that order. Howard wants to play with Williams and he knows that New Jersey is probably his best option to do so. Although playing with Stephen Jackson is a bonus, it is not arequirement for Howard. I have also heard that although Howard wouldn’t mind playing on the Bulls, they are not high on his list and he would rather play for the three teams on his list. So ultimately I do not think that Howard will be traded by the March deadline with the reason being Otis Smith. Smith does not want to pull the trigger on a Howard deal and possibly make a mistake by getting some bad value in return, and losing his job.
Our second question today comes from John in Los Angeles. Q: Will LeBron James ever win that coveted NBA championship?
I have been very critical of LeBron James in the past solely for the fact that he lacks the one thing that all great players have, a clutch gene. LeBron James turns into LeBrick James in the fourth quarter, just watch the 2011 NBA Finals against the Mavericks for proof, and cannot handle the pressure of being the go-to-guy. But still afterall that I do believe that James will win an NBA championship eventually, and possibly even this year, because he is just too talented not to. LeBron is the best player in the NBA, right now, and brings so much to the table when he steps on an NBA court. With LeBron’s size, speed, ball-handling ability, and athleticism, when he drives to the hoop he is virtually unstoppable.
Ultimately LeBron will win a title but I believe that it will be Dwayne Wade who wins it for him. Wade has already proven that he can handle the pressure of an NBA Finals team on his shoulders, and loves to be the go-to-guy in the last few minutes with the game on the line.
