Could Gilbert Arenas Sign with the Los Angeles Lakers?
According to head coach Mike Brown, the Lakers have looked into bringing free-agent guard Gilbert Arenas to Los Angeles.
“We’ve made a call on (him), yes,” Brown said. “We’ve called to see what his status is. That’s it.”
The Lakers are in desperate need of help, especially on the offensive side of the ball as they currently rank 19th in the NBA with 93.6 points per game. Arenas has been known in his career as a scorer so this would certainly be an upgrade in the Lakers backcourt. It should be noted that Brown has not seen any tape on him or talked to him directly, it is more or less an idea as of right now.
“We’ve had conversation about a lot of players. There are a ton of players out there that we’ve had conversation about.”
Arenas has been in trouble with the league several times over the past few years and his injuries have been piling up. He has only appeared in 117 games since 2007 which is a major reason why his statistics have dropped off. He has averaged 20.2 points per game in his career but since 2007 that average has dropped down to 16.1.
Arenas was traded mid-season last year by the Washington Wizards to the Orlando Magic where is numbers plummeted. In 49 games with the Magic, he averaged 8.0 points, 2.4 rebounds and 3.2 assists per game.
The Magic released Arenas on December 9, 2011 and he cleared waivers making him an unrestricted free agent. The Lakers are the first team to publicly show interest in him.
