Rasheed Wallace Wants To Play For The Los Angeles Lakers
Greg M. Cooper-US PRESSWIRE

A few weeks ago a story surfaced on Yahoo! Sports saying that Rasheed Wallace wanted to make an NBA comeback. The report, by Yahoo! Sports Adrian Wojnarowski, talked about Wallace and his desire to return to the NBA but did not include any teams who were interested in Wallace, or teams that Wallace was interested in. Well now we have a team that Wallace is definitely interested in, considering the fact that Wallace called the team himself.

Yahoo! Sports Marc J. Spears wrote a story earlier about Kenyon Martin and included this interesting statement, “If the Lakersdon’t sign Martin, they could have interest in adding Rasheed Wallace, who contacted the team several weeks ago, a league source said. Wallace retired after the 2009-10 season, but has told friends he’s interested in returning to the NBA.” Now the Lakers have said to be interested in Martin and Wallace, but they have also been linked to Gilbert Arenas and possibly trading for Ramon Sessions.

Well in case you didn’t know, the Lakers don’t have an infinite amount of money to spend on free-agents, not to mention that there is a salary cap in the NBA (which the Lakers are already way over) and a luxury tax (which the Lakers are also being assessed), so someone has to be left out of the fold here. It seems that the Lakers first option is to try and get Martin to sign with them, if that doesn’t work out then they will look at Wallace and see what type of shape he is in.

As for the point guard situation it doesn’t seem that the Lakers want to take a chance on 30-year-old Gilbert Arenas. Instead they are willing to try to get a deal done for the young Ramon Sessions but only if the price is right. The Lakers definitely need help in the backcourt and this is probably the area the Lakers should be fixing before doing anything else. With all of this being said though expect the Lakers to be very active, both in free-agency and with trades, in the upcoming weeks. Lakers General manager Mitch Kupchak knows that this roster can’t win an NBA title as currently assembled and is going to do everything in his power to try to make it better.
