The NBA fined Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban $75,000 and head coach Rick Carlisle $35,000 after their incidents during Wednesday night’s loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Cuban was fined for criticizing the officiating while Carlisle was fined for kicking the ball into the stands after a non-call that resulted in a Thunder basket. Carlisle received his second technical foul of the game and was ejected. Before leaving the court he went over and apologized to the Maverick fans in the front row including a young boy who was almost struck by the ball.

Someone in his position, as the president of the NBA coaches’ association, must realize he is a big part of the NBA and his behavior reflects that. Carlisle apologized via the media after the game.

“I want to apologize to our franchise, Mark, our fans,” Carlisle said. “The incident where the ball got kicked into the stands — that can’t happen. My intent was not to kick it into the stands, I was trying to kick it to the referee, but I’m not a very good kick. But that can’t happen; the officials made the right call on that one. That’s a regrettable situation.”

Cuban on the other hand went back to his old antics that have famously gotten him fined more than $1 million by the NBA over the years.

“Look, I haven’t said a whole lot about the officiating in a long, long time, but I haven’t seen it this bad in a long, long time,” Cuban said. “Guys miss calls; that’s part of the game. You’re not always going to have a great crew. Officials have got to learn that’s part of the game. But these were officials that have been part of the league for years, and it was just off-the-charts bad. And if no one ever says anything, nothing ever happens.”

Cuban frequently criticizes officials and turns in multiple calls for review but seems to never get the response he is looking for from the league office.

“If no one ever says anything, nothing ever happens,” Cuban said. “We turn in stuff not after every game, but we turn in stuff all the time and we get ‘inconclusive; inconclusive; yeah, we missed this; yeah, we got it right.’ That’s all fine and good, but there’s nobody reporting to us on accountability. And that needs to change.”

Instead of always looking to put the blame on someone outside of the organization Cuban should look within first. Dallas shot 35.7% from the field against the Thunder and are 18th in the NBA with a season average of 43.9%. They are also 14th in the league in points per game with 94.35.
