Cavs PG Kyrie Irving And C Anderson Varejao Forming A Dynamic Duo In Cleveland.
CLEVELAND, OHIO – With close losses to Orlando and Boston, there was concern that the (9-13) Cleveland Cavaliers needed to play with more energy for four quarters.
Led by the youthful play and energy of point guard Kyrie Irving and center Anderson Varejao, the Cavaliers would display a energetic team effort in upsetting the defending NBA champion (14-11) Dallas Mavericks, 91-88.
Cleveland would start the game with two Varejao dunks and a layup by small forward Omri Casspi to jump out to a quick 6-0 lead.
Varejao, currently fourth in the league in rebounding, would continue his rebounding tear by grabbing 17 rebounds to go along with 17 points on 8-of-13 shooting from the field.
Irving, who would start off slow by missing his first five shots, would finish 9-of-23 for the game with 20 points, seven assists, four rebounds and two steals.
After being pulled for point guard Ramon Sessions in the third quarter, Irving would return with 10:15 left in the game, and the score tied at 70-70 and make tough shots down the stretch, highlighting by a driving layup with 15.8 seconds left.
The Cavaliers would outscore Dallas 27-13 in the third quarter and withstand a 24 point, eight rebound effort from NBA Finals MVP, Dirk Nowitzki.
In his last five games, Irving has averaged 22.8 points in his last five games and Varejao has averaged a double-double with 14.0 points and 14.0 rebounds in 34.4 minutes.
The combination of energy and hustle of Varejao along with Irving’s uncanny ability to drive, shot and facilitate on offense looks to have given Cleveland a dynamic duo of its own that the Cavaliers can build around.
