Dirk Nowitzki Believes He Should Not Be An All-Star
If an NBA player who you did not know put up stats like 31.8 minutes per game, 17,2 points per game, 6.0 rebounds per game, shot 45.5 percent from the field, and 21.6 percent from the three-point line, would you vote him in as an NBA All-Star? Well your answer would more than likely be no. But if I told you that the same player who was putting up the aforementioned stats was the reigning Finals MVP Dirk Nowitzki, would you reconsider your answer? You shouldn’t but you probably would. Dirk Nowitzki is by and far the greatest foreign-born player in NBA, and an automatic lock to make the NBA Hall of Fame but his stats have just not been on par with other All-Stars this season.
Now one might say that he deserves an All-Star bid simply because of his past accomplishments, which is just wrong. A player should be voted into the All-Star game based on what he has done thus far in the season andNowitzki’s stats are just not as good as some of the other options for the Western Conference not to mention thathe has missed some time due to injury. Some people might disagree with me and that is fine but as for my view that Nowitzki shouldn’t make it this season, well at least there’s one person out there who has my back (sort of).
Dirk Nowitzki recently had an interview with ESPNDallas.com and here is what he had to say, from Tim MacMahon for ESPNDallas.com (via Yahoo! Sports): ”Averaging whatever, 15, 16 points, I don’t think you should be an All-Star.” But we’ll just have to wait and see. I think there is a lot of great young talent in this league that deserves to go. I think LaMarcus Aldridge has been stiff the last couple of years. He’s a great young player, fun to watch. You know Blake and Love are playing great. There is a lot of talent at my position. ”To me, it’s more about getting right again and getting my body back in rhythm and getting used to all the grinding and running and jumping again. I think that’s more important to me than an All-Star appearance at this point. Ultimately, (we want) to make a push after the All-Star break. That’s ultimately where my head is at here.”
The maximum number of reserves at the forward spot that there can be for the Western Conference is four.Nowitzki will find it very difficult to make it onto the roster this season as the Western Conference is loaded with multiple guys who have clearly outperformed him this season, guys like Kevin Love, LaMarcus Aldridge, Rudy Gay, and Paul Millsap. If Nowitzki does get picked as a reserve for the Western Conference, and beats out guys who are more deserving, it will not be based on this season’s perfromance, but rather on what he has done in the past.
