Paul Pierce passes Larry Bird on Celtics scoring list
As any basketball fan knows, Larry Bird is one of the greatest players in Boston Celtics history, if not NBA history.
This evening, Paul Pierce put himself in the conversation among the best Celtics players of all-time, passing Bird on the scoring list and ascending to the No. 2 overall mark, scoring his 21,792nd point with a three-pointer at the 10:23 mark of the third-quarter of tonight’s matchup with the Charlotte Bobcats. This three vaulted Pierce over Bird, whose second place mark previously stood at 21,971 points in his legendary Boston career.
Pierce is still far behind the No. 1 scorer in Boston Celtics history, the prolific, Hall of Famer All Star John Havlicek, who scored a whopping 26,395 points in a Celtic uniform.
Paul Pierce’s ability to finish going to the basket just as easily as he could knock down an open three has made him one of the NBA’s most dangerous scoring threats after entering the league from UCLA in 1998.
Boston coach Doc Rivers had nothing but positive things to say about the enigmatic combo forward following the game:
Paul has been great and deserves everything he gets, and Larry was great, but I don’t ever compare guys. (But) Paul is more of a scorer. He can pass, and he’s also a great rebounder. Larry did everything. It was great (for this franchise) to have them both. That’s the way I look at it.
Indeed.
Paul Pierce and Larry Bird were two very different players who individually impacted the game in very different ways, but the contributions of both to arguably the NBA’s best franchise cannot be understated.
