Los Angeles Lakers Interested In Allen Iverson?
The Los Angeles Lakers have had their share of point guard problems this season and seem to be resorting to desperate measures. Things got so bad that the Lakers reportedly called the Houston Rockets interested in third-string point guard Jonny Flynn. The Lakers are also reportedly interested in attending Gilbert Arenas’ workout in Los Angeles, and have Kobe Bryant’s approval if they choose to sign Arenas. Well now it seems that the Lakers point guard issues have gone to an even higher level of desperation.
According to a report via ESPN Los Angeles the Lakers are (or were) interested in signing Allen Iverson. Here is what the report had to say involving Iverson and the Lakers, “Allen Iverson, who sources indicated the Lakers had some interest in as long as he was willing to go to the NBA Developmental League for a few weeks first, is not the answer.” The story, written by ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith, goes on to say that Iverson is not the answer at point guard as he is not really a true point guard, which I could not agree with more.
Iverson has had troubles in the past with his character, off-the-court issues, and dedication to the game which really doesn’t fit in with the Lakers and their mood in the locker room. Kobe Bryant, although he has had some trouble off-the-court in the past, is one of the most dedicated and hard-working players in, not only the NBA, but any sport. Kobe dedicates himself to basketball, wants to win, and will accept nothing less. Kobe also has a large ego, like many other superstar athletes, and putting a player like Iverson, who like Kobe, possesses a large ego would not be a wise idea.
Iverson does not want to pass the ball, or defer to Kobe, instead he wants to score and show off to other teams that they made a mistake by not signing him. Now although Iverson fans may be dying to see this happen the report also indicated, “… it’s way unlikely Iverson actually ends up with the Lakers. Or for that matter, anywhere.” Simply put Iverson is washed up and cannot produce at a top level like the NBA anymore. Signing Iverson would be a huge mistake for the Lakers who would be better off exploring other, younger, options at point guard.
