Report: Blazers’ C Greg Oden out for season following microfracture surgery
As reported earlier today here on Rant Sports, injury-riddled Portland Trailblazers center was set to undergo his fifth knee operation in the past two years this afternoon in Aspen, Colorado.
It was expected this surgery would be only to clear out debris from his left knee, however, once the procedure was begun it was discovered that Oden indeed had substantial surface damage which required a microfracture procedure to be performed.
According to this press release from the Blazers, the procedure will force Oden to miss the remainder of the 2012 NBA season.
Oden, who has played only 82 games in his career after being the No. 1 overall pick in the 2007 NBA Draft, has had a total of five surgeries on his two knees, leading many to suggest the surgery performed today could indeed mark the end of his all-too-brief NBA career.
The Blazers’ center will become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the 2012 NBA season, and it is difficult to believe another club would take a chance on Oden given his injury history and the financial risk should his injuries continue going foward.
If indeed Greg Oden’s career has been cut short, it will be a sad end to a career once so full of promise.
Sad because Greg Oden never had the chance to prove to the Blazers that their substantial investment in his talents was a sound one.
Sad because wasted talent is always difficult to deal with.
Greg Oden’s life will soon take a new path which may, or may not, include basketball. Whatever he decides to do going forward, you have to wish him luck.
He seems to be more a victim of genetics and circumstance than neglect. Such circumstance is something no one expects and is deserving of our sympathy.
