Where Does Jason Kidd Rank Among the Great Point Guards of All-Time?

Jason Kidd has been elected to ten All-Star Games, was named NBA Co-Rookie of Year in 1995, and finally won his first Championship ring last season with the Dallas Mavericks. His most recent accolade was that he passed Michael Jordan for second on the All-Time steals list with 2,517 career steals, passing arguably the best player to ever lace up a pair of Jordans, Michael Jordan. Kidd has enjoyed an amazing career, but the fact remains to be seen of exactly how amazing. With that being said, let’s take a quick look at the top point guards in NBA history and how Jason Kidd compares to them:

1. John Stockton – Stockton dished out an unthinkable 15,806 assists throughout his career and easily is the gold standard at the position.

2. Ervin Magic Johnson – “Magic” is the only player in the history of the game who was able to play ever position on the floor, and make it look easy.

3. Oscar Robinson – The 12-time All-Star played in a game where the fast-break offense that we are accustomed to did not exist. Robinson brought flash to a position that was otherwise very regimented and unexciting.

4. Isiah Thomas – Thomas posted an amazing 9.3 dimes per game throughout his 14-year career. He was a life long Detroit Piston and the ultimate creator on offense.

5. Jason Kidd – Kidd can do it all; hit jumpers, dish the ball, play defense, and shoot from the outside. He appeared to average a triple-double earlier in his career, and has always been a very underrated defender.

Kidd still has all the tools to play at this level, even if it is only 25 minutes a game. He still has a strong enough supporting cast in Dallas to make one more run. Kidd will likely be a first ballot Hall of Famer some day down the road with his amazing resume, but for now he is going after one more ring.
