Kings To Stay In Sacramento?
The Maloof family has been trying to either secure a new building or a new city/stadium in order to move the Sacramento Kings from Sacramento to to another city, perhaps Seattle. The Maloofs were very close to securing a site in Anaheim last year, but the league shot down their proposal.
The latest reports out of Sacramento say the city is ready to make its appeal to the National Basketball Association as to why their team should remain. One major holdup in the Kings plan is how to secure money. The Maloof’s want to use taxpayer dollars, while the city wants the team to do something much cheaper.
AEG, who owns the Kings current arena, is set to make a contribution towards the project, although that figure remains unknown. The Maloof’s are also going to pay in some sort of order, but again that number is a question mark.
The NBA would be doing well if they were to keep the Kings in Sacramento. However, the chances of that happening, or the Hornets, is not very good. Seattle businessman Ron Burkle is pushing hard to have a team move up north to Seattle, but would it be good for the league?
The Super Sonics had some of the worst attendance records in the league their last few seasons, and that team had Kevin Durant on it.
I believe the NBA should not try to force the Hornets or Kings to move to away from their respective cities. The Kings have been working hard to get this proposal done by the March 1st deadline. The NBA is trying to sell the Hornets but have not found a suitable buyer.
Both teams have a lot of history with their local communities. The Kings need to start spending some money and work to become competitive. The Hornets can finally start to be competitive if they are able to find an owner. Interim general manager Dell Demps has been put in a bind by the league for finding players, as the league rules state the Hornets must not exceed the cap on any trade.
With proposals due all to soon, I say keep the teams where they are if possible.
