Sadler Out As Huskers Coach

The lack of competitiveness and lack of a March Madness birth has taken its second coach from the B1G 10 victim. Earlier today, Bruce Weber from the University of Illinois was shown the proverbial door. Now, Nebraska head coach Doc Sadler has also been given the door.

In six unimpressive seasons leading the Huskers, Sadler compiled a record of 89-70, but going just 34-63 in conference games between the Big XII and B1G 10. However, none of Sadler’s teams finished in the top six of either conference; that also includes two last place finishes.

Nebraska athletic direction Tom Osborne had this to say about Sadler, “Doc and I both felt this season could be his best with an experienced team returning, and with new facilities we could start moving into a brighter era for Nebraska basketball. However, injuries, a difficult schedule and competing in a new conference has made the season even more difficult.”

Doc made a comment later saying he won more games in his first five seasons at Nebraska than any other coach during their first five seasons. Sorry (ex) coach, but playing a weak non conference schedule is not going to help your case. When it really mattered, during conference play, it was not good enough.

Yes, Nebraska had some good wins undre Sadler, like a victory over Texas last year and Indiana this season. But Sadler’s teams also had some horrible losses, including at Iowa State last year when the Huskers were looking at a tournament bid. Iowa State had not won a conference game at that point last year, until a victory over the big red.

Now, Nebraska moves on in search of a new coach. Where they go from here nobody knows, but one thing is for certain: their conference record cannot get any worse (I hope).
