Was Trading For Stephen Jackson A Good Move For Spurs?
The San Antonio Spurs decided that a trade must be made at the deadline, acquiring Stephen Jackson in exchange for the overpaid and under performing Richard Jefferson. It was quite an interesting trade made, to say the least. Being a long time Spurs fan, I was happy to see Jefferson go. I liked the trade initially, but he never performed up to the money he was earning.
Jefferson had the lowest PER of any player on the team so far, which stands for Player Efficiency Rating. Kawhi Leonard was completely out-performing Jefferson, even though RJ was playing with the better unit.
However, I’m not sure I’m totally in favor of this trade from the Spurs side. Jackson has matured since the days at the Palace, but I’m not sure how well he will be in the locker room. San Antonio had great locker room chemistry, but all we have heard about Jackson is about how he has wanted out and was frustrated in Milwaukee.
He then got his wish to Golden State, and it did not take them long to ship him out of there.
Jackson was a favorite of Gregg Popovich in his previous stint with the Spurs. What he will bring is a more tenacity to the defensive unit, and will be a better matchup against bigger players like Dirk Nowitzki, Luis Scola, Kevin Durant, Kevin Love, and others among the plethora of great Western Conference big men.
It will be interesting to see how this trade works out for the Spurs. Will Jackson become a disruptive locker room force and doom the Spurs’ playoff chances? Or will he play like he did for the ’03 team and help them win a championship?
Only Jackson can control his behavior. He will be scrutinized for the rest of the season; lets see what happens.
