Video: JaVale McGee putback slam for the win
As far as first impressions go, JaVale McGee certainly made his presence felt.
The newly acquired center impressed in his first game with the Denver Nuggets, finishing an emphatic tip-slam off a missed free throw from Aaron Afflalo with five seconds remaining to give his new team the 116-115 victory. McGee ended with 15 points, 7 rebounds and 3 blocks in 24 minutes off the bench for the win.

McGee is known for his outrageous athleticism, though he doesn’t always put it to the best use. As a member of the Washington Wizards the 7-footer played immaturely, often making boneheaded plays or going for the highlight reel instead of being focused on winning the game. In a new situation at Denver, McGee will not have the same leash he had in Washington, and Nuggets coach George Karl should be able to get him focused on winning basketball games.
The Nuggets put up an astounding 40 points in the first quarter, but Detroit guard Ben Gordon brought the team back from beyond the arc. Gordon finished with 45 points including 9 of 9 three-pointers, tying an NBA record. Gordon made up for the scoring lost by the absence of guard Rodney Stuckey, who sat out Wednesday’s contest due to soreness in his toe.
Ty Lawson led the Nuggets with 25 and Afflalo added 23 in the victory. The Nuggets completed their 9-game homestead with a 5-4 record, and improved to 26-20 on the season. Denver now hits the road for a seven-game road trip beginning Friday at Utah. Detroit heads home for a meeting with LeBron James and the Miami Heat on Friday.
