Boris Diaw signs with San Antonio Spurs
Free agent Boris Diaw has signed with the San Antonio Spurs, according to a report from Yahoo! Sports. The 29-year-old forward reached a buyout agreement earlier this week with the Charlotte Bobcats after averaging 7.4 points and 5.3 rebounds in 37 appearances with the team.
Diaw was criticized earlier in the year for his conditioning and simply didn’t fit in on a team looking to rebuild with a young core of players and a league-worst 7-37 record. Diaw will pair with fellow French countryman Tony Parker, who is averaging 19 points and 8 assists while leading the Spurs to a 30-14 record on the year.
More from Adrian Wojnarowski:
Diaw, 29, is a versatile forward who fell out of favor with Bobcats head coach Paul Silas this season. For his nine-year career, Diaw has averaged 9.4 points and remained one of the league’s better passing forwards.
Despite starting Diaw in 28 games for Charlotte, Silas was frustrated with his unwillingness to be more aggressive in scoring. Diaw’s fitness issues have dogged him throughout his career, but he continues to show the ability to be a productive offensive player.
Diaw will bolster a frontcourt that features Tim Duncan, DeJuan Blair, Tiago Splitter and Matt Bonner. The Spurs also added veteran Stephen Jackson and reserve guard Patty Mills to help bolster the lineup for another playoff run.
The 6-8 forward should fit well in the San Antonio offense with his excellent passing and efficient scoring. Motivation should be high for Diaw after playing for a losing Bobcats squad for the last four seasons. The move clears the way for rookie big man Bismack Biyombo, who was taken seventh overall in the 2011 NBA Draft.
