Javale McGee, No Wizard, Could be Great Nugget
Javale McGee had his struggles with the Washington Wizards. He was portrayed almost as a cartoon character for his easy mistakes, lack of concentration and showmanship on a team that has had no firepower since guns were banned from the locker room. Tuesday night he even got a highlight reel worth of gaffs on Shaqtin-A-Fool, Shaquille O’Neal’s blooper feature.
In fact, the sideshow that was Javale McGee (or Pierre McGee on twitter) is no more. Since arriving in Denver he has played a smaller role in terms of stats production but has had a huge impact for the Nuggets. Earlier in the season, the Nuggets lacked attitude, but with McGee and rookie Kenneth Faried adding to the likes of Al Harrington and Corey Brewer, this team has enough personality to make their first round playoff match up interesting.
Of course, McGee is still funny on twitter, usually involving Mr Krabs on Spongebob, but there have been few negatives during his games. On a bench that sometimes runs 12 men deep, McGee is averaging 9.8 points, 5.8 rebounds and 1.6 blocks. He is averaging only one turnover a game and his long arms are keeping opposing players out of the paint.
In a recent game against the Orlando Magic, he was the star of the game with 17 points, 8 rebounds and 3 blocks. Not only is he dunking, but he also loves to get the alley hoop pass from Andre Miller. He made Big Baby Glen Davis look like a child with one dunk. The Nuggets gave up their 10-year veteran and top money maker Nene to grab McGee for the rest of the year. Nene lacked the heart night in and night out to fit into the Nuggets organization; McGee is constantly trying to be first to the ball with the Nuggets.
If there was any doubt that the Washington Wizards have no idea what they are doing,just look at McGee’s improvement after 19 games with George Karl. He does not cause problems and has publicly stated that he not only will fulfill whatever role is asked of him but also wants to improve his game. If you’re John Wall in Washington, McGee’s sudden improvement should worry you. It looks like re-signing the seven-foot McGee will be the Nuggets top priority this offseason. McGee was not a Wizard in Washington, but he could turn into the golden Nugget in Denver.
