Spencer Hawes earned a little bit of money on the Fourth of July.  The Philadelphia 76ers agreed to a two year, 13 million dollar deal with the free agent center.  Hawes had a solid start to last season before suffering from some injuries.

I am not sure that I understand this move for Philly.  Signing Hawes does not get them closer to a title.  The Sixers seem to be a team stuck in basketball purgatory.  They are good enough to make the playoffs, but not good enough to win a title.  Spencer Hawes can be an effective player, but he is also erratic.

Spencer Hawes had some great moments last season until he was bit by the injury bug.  He was knocking down open jumpers and getting a lot of rebounds.  After he was hurt, his play basically went in the tank until the playoffs.  He had some good playoff games and some bad  playoff games.

I expect the fans are probably not too happy about this signing.  Hawes is solid but he is not going to push the team closer to a title.  I thought the Sixers would let him go and try to rebuild in a different way.  They will probably cut ties with Elton Brand, which will save money.  Too bad it is going to Hawes.

The reaction to this signing will be interesting.  There will be fans that love it and fans that I hate.  I personally do not like the deal, but I am not a basketball GM.  Time will tell how good it really is.
