The Dallas Cowboys continue to make roster moves as fullback Tony Fiammetta still hasn’t recovered from his mysterious illness. On Tuesday, the Cowboys cut receiver Akwasi Owusu-Ansah and activated practice squad fullback Shaun Chapas. Cowboys team doctors still don’t know what is plaguing Fiammetta so Chapas will be Dallas’ fullback for the time being.
Owusu-Ansah didn’t see any action on offense since being re-activated after his conversion from defensive back. His only time on the field was kickoff return, but the Cowboys’ need at fullback is growing every week.
Third-string tight end John Phillips filled in at fullback the last two games, but running back DeMarco Murray’s yards-per-carry average took a nosedive without Fiammetta in the lineup. A seventh round draft pick in April, Chapas will get his chance to play in the NFL when the Cowboys visit the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday.
Cowboys running back Felix Jones will take over returning kicks while Chapas will basically try to imitate Fiammetta in the backfield. The veteran fullback’s absence has been blatant as Murray averaged 6.7 yards per carry with Fiammetta as his lead blocker and only 3.4 without him. That puts a little bit of pressure on Chapas, but Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is confident in the rookie.
“We’ve seen how good we are or can be when we have that prototype fullback in there,” Jones said. “We don’t want to in any way put a cookie-cutter approach to what the fullback is.”
