The Dallas Cowboys aren’t used to missing the impact of a low-profile player like fullback Tony Fiammetta. In two games without Fiammetta, the Cowboys’ team average of yards per rush has more than halved. On Wednesday, Fiammetta said he’s starting to recover from a mysterious illness and hopes to play next Sunday night when the New York Giants visit Cowboys Stadium.
“I’m alive and well and doing OK,” Fiammetta said. “Things are getting better. I’m starting to turn the corner. Hopefully, I’ll be ready for next week.”
The Cowboys desperately need Fiammetta back in the lineup for what is sure to be a critical NFC East divisional game with the Giants. Dallas currently leads New York by one game, so next week’s contest could be a showdown for first place if the Cowboys lose to the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday and the Giants beat the Green Bay Packers.
The outcome of those two games is likely to be the opposite, but the Cowboys would much rather have a healthy Fiammetta in the lineup to distance the Giants in the division race if Dallas leads by two games after this week’s contests.
Fiammetta didn’t rule himself out of this week’s game against Arizona, but said it’s unlikely he’ll play just to be safe. The Cowboys’ fullback isn’t going to take any chances with his mysterious ailment.
“When people say ‘unknown illness’ in the injury report, people that are close to me and friends are going to ask me what’s going on,” Fiammetta said. “We’re just still trying to get to the bottom of it. There’s no definite answer out there. There’s nothing that I can really tell them.”
