Dallas Cowboys quarterback Jon Kitna informed the team on Thursday he will retire. Kitna was placed on injured reserve on Dec. 14 from a sore back that began plaguing him during training camp and never healed. Kitna, whose contract expires at the end of the season, has not released a statement.
The 39-year-old veteran completed a very successful NFL career, including stints with the Seattle Seahawks, Cincinnati Bengals, Detroit Lions and Cowboys. His career began in 1997 with the Barcelona Dragons of NFL Europe. Kitna led the Dragons to the World Bowl title and he was named MVP of the game.
Kitna finished his NFL career with 29,745 passing yards, 169 touchdowns and 165 interceptions. He never played in a Super Bowl or was named to an All-Pro team, but he was a solid starting quarterback and gave the Cowboys something to cheer about in 2010 when he took over for an injured Tony Romo and led Dallas to a 5-5 record as a starter.
The Cowboys’ backup quarterback is Stephen McGee, but the team is expected to bring another reserve passer via the 2012 NFL Draft or free agency.
